Eco-Friendly Cleaning for Every Gym and Workout Space

Over 70% of conventional cleaning products contain harmful chemical agents, from corrosive compounds to air-polluting chemicals. With this knowledge, many people have begun reaching for natural, eco-friendly options that help support the goal of living a healthier lifestyle. Of course, a healthy lifestyle usually includes the use of a commercial or at-home gym space, but are natural cleaning options effective for these areas? The answer is a resounding ‘yes!’

Sanitizing for Gym Mats and Vinyl

Due to the material that exercise mats are made from combined with moisture from sweat and humidity, they’re quite a breeding ground for bacteria and mildew to grow. A gym should be cleaned thoroughly and regularly, with careful attention given to mats. Tea tree oil has become the go-to option for sanitizing for individuals looking for a safe, eco-friendly cleaning product, thanks to its natural disinfectant properties. Mix one teaspoon of oil with one cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray down both sides of the mats, allow to stand for 3 minutes, and then wipe clean. The oil not only cleans but also makes a good conditioning agent for the mat material. Be sure to allow them to dry completely before returning them to the floor or folding them.

Disinfecting and Deodorizing Floors

Along with floor and equipment mats, the floors themselves also need to be cleaned regularly, especially areas beneath mats and equipment. A mixture of ½ cup of white vinegar to one gallon of warm water makes an excellent solution for mopping. Not only does vinegar deodorize, but science has long proven that acetic acid, the acidic compound in vinegar, can kill a broad range of bacteria. Vinegar can also be used for cleaning mirrors, countertops, and other hard surfaces, like shower walls and tubs. It’s great for shining metal surfaces as well.

General Cleaning

When it comes to sanitizing, vinegar and tea tree oil are great, but when you need to do some general cleaning on equipment to remove dirt (like free weights and dumbells), good old soap and water will do the trick. Many soaps that are labeled as “green” still contain harmful chemicals like phosphates and dioxane. Mix up your own eco-friendly suds by combining two parts castile soap with one part warm water. You can place free weights and other loose equipment in a large bucket with the soap and water, allow to soak for just a few minutes, and then remove and wipe clean and dry. For larger pieces, just use a washcloth dipped into the soapy water, wipe away dirt and debris, and allow to dry. If you’d like, you can add a few drops of lemon or other essential oil to add some fragrance. This isn’t necessary, but it is a nice addition.

Clearly, store-bought cleaning products aren’t required for a clean, sanitary, and good-smelling gym. Eco-friendly options not only do a great job, but they’re healthier for both you and the environment- not to mention your wallet.
